The Department of Physical Education at Govt College Mokeri offers two engaging and insightful courses designed to promote health, fitness, and well-being:

MDC in Physical Education – Physical Fitness and Active Living (Second Semester)

This course focuses on understanding the principles of physical fitness and the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle. It equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed for lifelong health and wellness.

Open Course – Physical Activity, Health, and Wellness (Fifth Semester)

Designed as an elective for final-year UG students, this course explores the role of physical activity in enhancing overall health and wellness. It emphasizes a holistic approach to well-being, integrating physical, mental, and social dimensions.

Through these courses, the department aims to foster a culture of active living and empower students to achieve a healthier and more balanced life.

 MDC in Physical Education * Physical Fitness and Active Living (Second Semester)

This course is designed for second semester students and focuses on enhancing knowledge, skills, and practices that contribute to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Objectives: 

* To understand the fundamentals of physical fitness and its importance in daily life.

* To promote awareness about the components of fitness, including strength, endurance, flexibility, and agility.

* To encourage the adoption of active living through practical engagement in physical activities.

* To equip students with strategies for lifelong health and well*being.

Outcomes: 

* Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of physical fitness in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

* They will be able to assess their own fitness levels and design personalized fitness programs.

Open Course * Physical Activity, Health, and Wellness (Fifth Semester)

This open course is offered in the fifth semester and emphasizes the interplay between physical activity, health, and wellness. It is accessible to all final*year UG students as an open elective.

 

Objectives:

* To provide theoretical and practical knowledge about the significance of physical activity in enhancing health and wellness.

* To explore the relationship between regular physical activity and the prevention of chronic diseases.

* To foster a holistic approach to well*being, encompassing physical, mental, and social dimensions.

* To encourage students to integrate wellness principles into their academic, professional, and personal lives.

 

Outcomes:

* Students will understand the importance of physical activity as a key determinant of overall health and wellness.

* They will develop the ability to incorporate wellness strategies into their routines for improved quality of life.

* Students will acquire skills to evaluate and improve their own health behaviors.

SYLLABUS FOR OPEN COURSE FIFTH SEMESTER

Physical Activity Health and wellness Paper CODE – PEN5D03

Total Hours : 48; Credits: 3; Hours/Week: 3; Total Marks 75 ( Internal 15 & External 60)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Module I:

  • Introduction to physical education, Health and Wellness (5 hrs)
  • Definition, aim, objectives and importance of physical education.
  • Definition and Importance of Health.
  • Meaning and concept of wellness.

Module II: Concept of Fitness (12 hours)

  • Types of fitness. Definition of Physical fitness. Types of physical fitness – Health related physical fitness, Performance related physical fitness and Cosmetic fitness.
  • Components of physical fitness – speed, strength, endurance, flexibility and coordinative abilities. Assessment of physical fitness components. Fitness balance.

Module III: Exercise principles, (5 hrs)

  • Principles of exercise programme, Types of Exercise.
  • Benefits of Exercise, Exercise and heart rate zone.

Module IV: Vital signs, Lifestyle/Hypo kinetic diseases and its

management (10 hours)

  • Vital signs- Pulse rate, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, Body

temperature, Diseases- Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, Osteoporosis,

CHD, arthritis.

  • Fitness assessment- Body mass index, Waist to Hip Ratio,

Module V: First Aid. Nutrition. Postural deformities (8 hrs)

  • Definition of First Aid,
  • Aim of First Aid
  • Principles of First Aid.
  • RICE, ABC of First Aid, First Aid for sprain, strain, Fracture, Bleeding, Drowning and Snake Bite.
  • Nutritional balance, Nutritional deficiency diseases. BMR
  • Meaning of good posture, causes of poor posture, importance of good posture
  • Postural deformities and corrective measures – Kyphosis, Lordosis, Scoliosis, Bow leg, Knock knee, Flat foot

Module VI: Science of Yoga, Emotional control, stress management (8 hrs)

  • Definition and meaning of Yoga, Asana, and Pranayama. Eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga –Yama,Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Prathyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi.
  • Asanas and its effects : 1. Standing (Balancing) – Vrikshasana, Padahasthasana, Ardha Chakrasana. 2. Sitting ( Meditative) – Vajrasana, Padmasana, 3. Prone lying – Bhujangasana, Salabhasa. 4. Supine – Uttitha padasana, Naukasana. 5. Relaxative – SavasanaPranayamas and its effects-1) Surya Bedhana( Heating), 2) Chandra bedhana( Cooling) 3) Nadisudhi ( Balancing)

 Activities and Initiatives by the Department of Physical Education

The Department of Physical Education at Govt College Mokeri is dedicated to fostering physical fitness, skill development, and well-being among students and staff. In addition to offering structured courses, the department actively organizes and supports the following programs and initiatives:

DC Plan Fund Coaching Camps

Specialized coaching camps were conducted for cricket, football, judo (men and women), and wushu, offering expert training to students passionate about excelling in these sports.

Women Empowerment Through martial arts

To encourage inclusivity and self-defense awareness, judo practice sessions were extended to non-sportswomen students, fostering empowerment and physical fitness among women on campus.

Appointment of martial art Coach

The department appointed Coach expert, to lead judo training sessions. Their guidance significantly enhanced the skills of participating students.

Fitness Orientation for Staff

A fitness orientation for  staff members, including faculty and administrative staff. Led by Dr. Kunjikannan R, the session emphasized the importance of fitness and practical exercise routines, promoting a healthier lifestyle on campus.

Utilization of Gym and Yoga Hall

The department conducts yoga training sessions for NSS volunteers in a dedicated yoga hall, encouraging mindfulness and holistic health practices.A well-equipped gymnasium caters to students, supported by orientation sessions for safe and effective equipment usage.

Recreational Sports for Staff

Recreational activities such as badminton are organized for staff members, promoting well-being and work-life balance.Through these initiatives, the Department of Physical Education continues to play a vital role in enhancing the physical and mental health of the college community while nurturing talent and fostering inclusivity.
