Department of English

Established in the year of 1981, the Department of English became full-fledged with BA Functional English in 1998. MA Language and Literature was sanctioned in 2006, and in 2015 the Department was recognized as a Research Centre. The Department currently has three Research Guides in its faculty.       All the class rooms under the department are fitted with either a Plasma/LCD screen or Wall-Mounting Projector to facilitate ICT enabled transaction of content. The department has a good stock of books that are issued to the students for research purposes. The departmental faculty actively engage in Research Activities and Extension work. They have numerous research publications to their credit. One of the faculty members is a recipient of UGC Research Award 2016. Two of the faculty members are resource persons at UGC-HRDC centres at Kannur University and Kerala University. The faculty participates regularly in programmes and interfaces organized byFLAIR (Fostering Linkages in Academic Excellence and Innovation in Research)an inter-university quality enhancement programme for faculty spearheaded by New Initiatives in Higher Education, Government of Kerala, Thiruvananthpuram. The Department is also frequented by eminent academicians, authors, actors and activists regularly. B A Functional English honours with Research is offered by the department 2024 onwards under the FYUGP.

The students of the department are mainly from schools in and around the hillocks of Vadakara, Perambra and Thottilpalam. The Admission process to both UG and PG are centralized through Single Window System and is managed by the University of Calicut. The Admission Process to Research Program is done through a Research Committee constituted at the department and college level as per the statutes of the affiliating University.

The Department encourages the students to select interdisciplinary courses viz. Open Course system. The students of Fifth semester BA FE opt for courses from a pool of Historical Tourism, E-Commerce, Advanced Mathematical Skills, and Physical Health and Well-being offered for 4 credits by History, Commerce, Mathematics and Physical Education Departments respectively. The students will be tested and evaluated by the concerned departments. The Department offers Communicative English as an Open Course for students from other disciplines to opt. The Department offers for BA Functional English, a core course in Film Studies (2016 onwards), catering to the interdisciplinary nature of the emerging academic discourses. The department has previously (2010 to 2015) offered complementary courses on Public Administration and Public Relation.

 

All programs offered by the department follow Credit based Semester system.
