The Literary Forum of Department of English, Govt College Mokeri, organized a class on mental well being for the PG English students on 21/08/25. Dr. Priya P, Professor of Hindi, of Govt Arts and Science College Kozhikode engaged the session. The focus of the program was on the topic ‘thought power ‘ and the importance of goal setting in life.


Dr. Arunlal K introduced Dr. David J. Franklin, who engaged and online session on (21-8-25) global indigenous writings, discussing definitions of indigenous people, the contentious term “Scheduled Tribes” in India, and the evolution of indigenous literature from oral traditions to written forms. David Jeyaraj’s Presentation highlighted two key texts: Doris Pilkington Garimara’s “Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence” and Narayan’s “Kocharethi,” identifying colonization, land loss, identity crises, and the erosion of languages and traditions as common themes. David Jeyaraj’s Presentation also addressed questions on indigenous knowledge systems, the balance between tribal seclusion and inclusion in mainstream society, and the distinction between tribal and Dalit writings. The session concluded with a discussion on the lecture.


Dr Shyam Prasad.R, Assistant Professor of English, Govt College Nadapuram, on 23-8-25 delivered a presentation focused on research project writing for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The resource person gave a lecture defining research and project work, explaining how to identify research problems, and outlining a step-by-step process for writing projects, including data collection and citation. Dr. Sunitha Srinivas encouraged student questions, expressed gratitude for Shyam Prasad R’s detailed presentation, and suggested a future session on documentation and in-text citations.


The PhD Viva Voce and Open Defence of Sasikumar P, Research Scholar under the guidance of Dr. Yoosaph AK, Retd. Professor of English, Govt College Mokeri was conducted on 18-8-25 at the Academic and Digital Resource Center, Govt. College Mokeri. The chairperson Dr. Anvar Sadhath VP who conducted the defence raised questions pertaining to his report as well as that of the other examiners. Sasikumar P successfully defended his thesis at the viva voce and open defence. The session concluded with the vote of thanks by the scholar.


Dr. Priya K. Nair gave an online Invited Lecture (11-8-25) on new materialism and discussed its theoretical perspectives.
The session detailed how new materialism challenges anthropocentric views by disrupting the habitual humanization of reality and uncovering “more than human realities”. Dr. Priya also highlighted how generative AI challenges the traditional understanding of authorship by demonstrating abilities like hallucination, imagination, and lying, which were previously considered uniquely human attributes. Dr Arunlal was the moderator of the lecture. The talk concluded with an interaction in which the participants actively participated.


Flagging off the academic year, the dept Literary Forum conducted an orientation session for the first year FYUGP students. Aswin Vijayan, Assistant Professor of English, Zamorins Guruvayoorappan College, as Resource Person, gave the Invited Lecture on “Orientation to Academic Excellence: An Introduction to Four Year Honors Program” on 23-7-2025. The session was attended by the students of the department as well as the other departments in the college. The talk also gave the parents, who attended, an understanding of the FYUGP Regulations and components.


The year 2025-2026 was marked by the transfer of three faculty of the department Seena J, Preetha PV and Miby Miriam Jacob. A farewell for these faculty who had found a place in everyone’s hearts with their dedication and commitment was organized jointly by the MA English and the BA Functional English students on 26-6-2025. Along with sharing their thoughts and memories, the students as a token of love gifted the faculty beautiful drawings done by them.


The academic year 2025-2026 began for the PG Dept. of English with the Farewelll Party “Letters to Yesterday” conducted for second year MA English students on 19/6/25. The initiative was beautifully put in action by the IMA students with the support of the PG tutors and the dept. faculty. On the occasion the senior students shared their memorable moments in the campus with the faculty. The farewell became more lively with the various games organized for the parting students.


The MA English students organized a farewell function “Viva la Vida” on 28-3-25 in connection with the retirement of Dr Yoosaph AK, Professor of English. The students and faculty of the department attended the get together and wished Dr. Yoosaph a happy retired life.


The PhD Viva Voce and Open Defence of Mr. Nisanth TV (Research Scholar under the guidance of Dr Arunlal K, Associate Professor of English, GCMokeri) was conducted at the Academic and Digital Resource Centre, Govt College Mokeri on 25-3-25, 10.00am. The title of the thesis was “Aesthetic Reconfigurations and the Formation of the Cultural Self in Popular Media Representations: A Study of the Visual Culture Practices of Kerala in the 1990s”
After the initial thesis presentation and the Viva Voce, the chairperson of adjudicators declared the thesis as open to the audience for questions and discussion. The scholar addressed the questions and successfully defended his thesis at the Open Defence.


The Dept. of English along with the District Employment Exchange and Employment Services Kerala conducted a PSC Orientation Programme for the students of the college on 27-02-25. The students of the institution actively participated in the session engaged by employment officers from the district employment services. The focus of the interaction was on career development, employment opportunities and skill development.


Merit Day was held on 11th Feb 2025 in the English Department of Government College Mokeri to honor the students who secured topmost marks in last year’s University exams.

* Aswathy S (Batch Topper MA English 2022-2024)
Principal Ashraf Koyilothankandiyil gave away the awards and mementoes to the students.
This program was attended by the graduate and post graduate students and served as a motivation for students to strive for excellence.


A Collage:A Communication Skills workshop was conducted on February 11, 2025, for Graduate Students by the Department of English in association with the IQAC. The workshop was led by Lalith S, Assistant Professor at Government Brennen College Thalassery.
The workshop focused on improving students’ communication skills, including public speaking, presentation skills, and interpersonal communication. Students participated in interactive activities and received feedback from Lalith S. The workshop was well-received by the students, who found it to be informative and helpful.

 


The Department of English Association was inaugurated on 10-2-25. The chief guest was the dept alumnus, Sri. Sooraj M S, a faculty at RNM Higher Secondary School.


Dr. V T Sathyan (a Former faculty of Arts and Science College) engaged a session on PSC orientation for the UG and PG students of the college. This Orientation session on Indian Constitution was organised (on 4-2-2025 at the Seminar Hall) by the IQAC and the Literary Forum of the Dept. of English. Orienting the students towards competitive examinations and a bright career, the Resource Person spoke on the Indian Constitution and drew the students into an active discussion.


Self Unfoldment: A Session on Life and Happiness was conducted on 22-1-25.
Dr. Priya, Professor of Hindi, Govt. Arts and Science College, Kozhikode, delivered a talk on the essential mental powers that help people to find happiness in life and achieve their goals. She focused on the ways in which a person can strengthen one’s self and spread positivity among others. The session provided valuable tips on how to confront difficult situations and move forward with confidence and focus. Dr. Priya emphasized that opening up one’s self with strength and confidence can lead to focus and happiness in life. The students actively interacted with the resource person and made it lively.


An online session on Dalit Women’s Life Writing was conducted on 20-12-24. The resource person Dr Vishnu Narayanan, Asst. Professor from the Institute of English, University of Kerala focused on Dalit Writing and Autobiographies. The session became more lively with the audience raising questions and expressing their views.


An Online Workshop on AI Tools for Research was conducted on 07-12-24 via Google meet. The session was engaged by Jasimudeen S, Librarian, St Stephen’s College, Kottayam. Besides familiarising the participants with AI as a tool for research, the resource person also focused on the ethical use of AI and issues like plagiarism.


A talk on “Censoring Mohiniyattom:The Lost History of Women’s Erotic Dance Idiom in Malayalam Cinema” was held online on 30-11-24. The session was engaged by Dr Sreebitha PV, Associate Professor, Dept. of English Studies, Kannur University. The talk was followed by a lively discussion in which the participants interacted with the resource person .


A Workshop on Research Methodology was organized by the Dept. of English in association with the IQAC on 18-11-24. The session was led by Shyamprasad R, Research Scholar, IIST Trivandrum. The Workshop introduced the Post Graduate students to research methods and methodology.

The Department of English flagged off its Online Invited Lecture Series with a talk on 16-11-24 by Dr Priya K Nair, faculty of St Teresa’s College Kochi and former Research Officer KSHEC. Dr. Priya delivered an informative lecture on “Mapping Precarity and Biovalue in literature.” An engaging discussion followed the talk.


“CUFYUGP: Navigating the Future”, an interactive session on the Four Year UG programme implemented by the University of Calicut, was conducted (online) for the BA Functional English students and their parents by the Literary Forum of the Department of English on 07-11-2024. The resource person was Sri. Aswin Vijayan (Master Trainer, CUFYUGP). The interaction helped the students and their parents to understand the four-year BA Hons. Programme and clear their doubts regarding the same.

To mark the arrival of the first year MA students, “Rookie Rendevouz” a get together of the MA students and faculty was held at the department on 06-11-2024. Abhinitha V, IIMA English who qualified for PhD admission in the 2024 UGC NET exam was felicitated on the occasion.

 

An online paper presentation was conducted by the Research Forum on (5-11-24) the topic “Myths in Motion:Folklore and Video Game Narratives” (via Google Meet). The paper was presented by Ms Sreya Mukherjee, PhD Research Scolar, EFLU Hyderabad. The presentation was followed by a lively discussion on video games, folklore and narratives.

“English Unlocked” a Workshop for school children was conducted on 26/06/2024 by the Literary Forum, Dept. of English. High school students from Govt HSS Kuttiady attended the workshop. The Workshop was inaugurated by our Principal, Sri. Ashraf Koyilothan Kandiyil. The students actively interacted with the faculty and participated in the activities conducted at the workshop.


The first issue of Crosswaves, the Department of English Peer Reviewed Research Journal Crosswaves was released on 06.03.23 by the Principal, Sri. Ashraf Koyilothan Kandiyil. The first issue was handed over to Dr. Dinesh MP, the HoD, Dept. of Economics and Secretary, PTA.
A memento was also given to Aswathi M, BA Functional English (2019-22 batch)top scorer at this release function.

Inauguration of the Dept. of English Literary Forum and the release of the student’s Digital Magazine was carried out on 14.01.22 by our college Principal Sr. Ashraf KK.

The PG Department of English and Center for Research, Govt. College Mokeri is conducting an invited lecture series. The event will be inaugurated by our respected principal sri Ashraf KK on 28.01.2022. The invited lectures will be on 28th, 29th and 30th of January 2022.Inviting all of you to be a part of the lecture series

 ManyWorkshops have been conducted by the department:

  • A workshop on Film and Literature for school students (National High School, Vattoli) was conducted on 24/06/14.
  • A workshop on poetry was given to school students (Kuttyadi Govt. High School) on 13/12/2014.
  • UK Kumaran, former SahithyaAkademi vice-president interacted with the students on 14th February 2014, inaugurating a One-day workshop on fiction “Katha Silpasala” conducted by MadhusoodhananKadathanaad and MohananNaduvathur.
  • JayaprakashKuloor, the theater veteran gave a theater workshop to students of III BA FE on 03.02.2014.
  • A One-day Theatre Workshop for students of VI semester BA Functional English was conducted under the auspice of distinguished faculty members from School of Drama, Trissur.
  • An inter-collegiate theatre workshop was given by the department in January 2013. Dr. Vinod Narayan, Maya and Prashanth from the School of Drama Trissur conducted the workshop. 13 students from Ma’Adin College Malappuram participated in the workshop.
  • RajagopalanKarappatta (Drama Artist, All India Radio) gave a workshop on voice modulation and dialogue delivery in theater to the III BA FE on 14. 02. 12.
  • One day Workshop on Poetry for High School and higher Secondary Students from Kuttiadi govt. School was conducted on 17.6.2015
  • One day Workshop on Communicative Skills for High School and higher Secondary Students from National School Vattoli was conducted on 25.6.2015
  • A One-day workshop on Skill Teaching was given to teachers of neighbouring public schools on 11.06.15.

Details of student enrichment programs (special lectures /classes) with external experts:

  • Students are encouraged to participate in academically oriented programs hosted by other colleges.
  • Seminars/workshops are regularly conducted by the department with external experts to ensure social awareness, updating of knowledge as well as the academic development of the students.
  • Special lectures on gender sensitization and media awareness are regularly organized by the departmen Debates are organized annually on Womens’s Day. In addition to this the students are encouraged to participate in Quizzes, motivational training programs and job fairs.
  • Various extra-input programmes designed by the Higher Education Department such as Walk with the Scholar (WWS), Scholar Support Program (SSP) and Additional Skills Acquisition Program (ASAP) are administered successfully in the department.
