Established in the year 1981, the Department of English became full-fledged with BA Functional English in 1998. MA Language and Literature was sanctioned in 2006, and in 2015 the Department was recognized as a Research Centre. Offering more flexibility the department has implemented the Four Year Undergraduate Programme, BAFunctional English Honours with Research during the academic year 2024-25. The Department currently has three Research Guides in its faculty. The department has well equipped classrooms that facilitate ICT enabled teaching-learning. The students are not only from schools in and around the hillocks of Vadakara, Perambra and Thottilpalam but from all over the state. The UG and PGadmissions are centralized through Single Window System and is managed by the University of Calicut.The Admission Process to the PhD Program is carried out as per the guidelines of the Directorate of Research University of Calicut. The Research Admission Committee (RAC) constituted as per the statutes of the affiliating University looks into the admission procedure of the PhD programme. Admissions to all the courses offered are carried out as per the Govt. reservation norms and the University admission guidelines.

To introduce the students to emerging interdisciplinary areas of study,the department conducts workshops and Invited Lectures for the UG/PG students and Research Scholars in collaboration with other institutions.The department has a Research Forum and a Literary Forum that looks into this.The department has a functional MoU with Govt. Brennen College,Thalassery. The department faculty regularly take part in short term, refresher, orientation programmes, govt. or other funded initiatives as participants or Resource Persons. Crosswaves is an annual peer-reviewed interdisciplinary Research Journal from the PG Department of English & Centre for Research, Govt. College Mokeri. It is designed to publish research papers in interdisciplinary researches in humanities, with special focus on literary studies, gender equity, and social inclusion. The journal encourages interpretative criticism and fresh insights into new social, cultural and equity issues as well as readings on established authors/texts, seeking to generate a serious debate relevant to the present times.

Students are encouraged to participate in academically oriented programs hosted by other colleges. Seminars/Workshops/Invited Lectures are regularly conducted by the department with external experts to ensure social awareness, updating of knowledge as well as the academic development of the students. Special lectures on gender sensitization and media awareness are regularly organized by the department. Debates and interactive sessions are organized annually on Womens’s Day. In addition to this the students are encouraged to participate in Quizzes, motivational training programs and job fairs. Various extra-input programmes designed by the higher education department such as Walk with the Scholar (WWS), Scholar Support Program (SSP), Additional Skills Acquisition Program (ASAP), Earn While You Learn (EWYL), Hunger Free campus are administered successfully in the department.
